Abstract: A few years ago, new generations of superplasticizers for concrete based on PolyCarboxylate-Ether (PCE) have been developed. We present the results of a fundamental study that shows the effect of clay on the interaction between sand and, in a first stage, a commercial superplasticizer (50% Lignosulfonate/50% PCE) without defoamer. We highlight the mechanism of this interaction and the consequences on air entrainment inhibition and rheology. After having shown that the methylene blue test is the most suitable method for quantifying the clay content in given sand, we have investigated, in a second stage and to confirm our model, the effect of the pure products i.e. the pure Lignosulfonate and pure PCE on the same variables.
