Abstract: The work presented here corresponds to some preliminary results of a project whose goal is to study the effects of nanoparticles on the characteristics and performance of lime mortar. As a starting point, a commercial lime mortar was used to produce a set of test specimens to which SiO2 nanoparticles were added in quantities ranging from 1 to 7 wt%. The mortar specimens were stored at 25°C in 35% relative humidity for a period of four months to allow for carbonation, and were then tested. Conclusions have not yet been completely established, but it seems that the physical and mechanical properties of the modified mortars are significantly affected both by the quantity of nanoparticles added as well as by the procedure with which the nanoparticles are incorporated during mortar preparation. Further studies are still necessary.
