Abstract: A microgrout based on diethyl oxalate binder and limestone aggregate was developed for
the conservation of painted lime plasters detached from a limestone substrate, after
formulations based on nanolime dispersions failed to perform as expected. Microgrouts
bound with nanolime, nanosilica, ammonium oxalate and diethyl oxalate were developed
and tested in the field, and diethyl oxalate formulations demonstrated the best working
properties and performance characteristics. The diethyl oxalate microgrouts were further
subjected to laboratory testing to determine the rate and products of binder and aggregate
reaction. This article describes the results of the field development and testing of these
microgrouts, and the characterization of the mineralogical phases formed in the set diethyl
oxalate microgrout via X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) coupled with quantitative phase
analysis (QPA).
