Abstract: NanoSiO2 and nanoCa(OH)2 were introduced into high-volume fly ash (HVFA) cement- based materials. Results revealed that both nanoparticles were capable of enhancing the early age hydration process of cement, and thus increased the early age strength of the cementitious materials. However, due to the high pozzolanic reaction of nanoSiO2 with calcium hydroxide, produced from cement hydration, and the characteristics of its hydration products, the hydration process of both cement and fly ash was hindered by nanoSiO2 at later age. NanoCa(OH)2 was found to be effective of enhancing both the early and later age properties of HVFA cement-based materials.
