Abstract: This paper presents an experimental investigation of the influence of interfacial transition zone (ITZ) on water vapour permeability of concrete. In this study, composite specimens consisting of rod shaped coarse aggregate (CA) and cement mortar of the same height were used to form percolated ITZ between CA and mortar. In all of the specimens, CA volume fractions were the same, however, the total lateral surface areas of CAs were varied. In the experiment, water vapour transported through the specimens in the direction paralleled the lateral surfaces of CAs. The evaluated ITZ permeability of the specimens was 41 to 102 times of the permeability of the mortar specimens when ITZ thickness was assumed to be 30, 40, 50μm.
