Abstract: France produces around 30 Mt/year of recycled concrete aggregates, which are generally used
in road works or embankments. In the near future, less new roads will be built and more old
buildings will be deconstructed. In addition, more than 50 Mt of mixed demolition materials
containing a good quantity of concrete or natural rock is also available. Therefore, it is
necessary to use this existing material to preserve the natural aggregate resources,
increasingly difficult to obtain, and to avoid waste material landfills.
In order to show that it is possible to recycle concrete for making new concrete and for using
the fine part of recycled concrete aggregate in cement production, a national R&D project,
partially sponsored by the French Ministry of Ecology, gathering 47 partners, was set in 2012.
Its acronym is RECYBETON, from "RECYclage complet des BETONs" (Complete Recycling
of Concretes).
Recently finished, RECYBETON has produced fifty-two research reports, a guide of
recommendations, proposals to adapt standards and regulations, and six experimental
demonstration sites. The results of this complete research are fully described in two scientific
books: one in French, "Le béton recycle", and the other in English, "Concrete Recycling:
Research and Practice". A presentation of the main outputs is done.
