Abstract: This work investigates the carbonation of hydrated oil-well cements by reactive transport
modelling. The study focuses on changes in the cement phase assemblage due to CO2
exposure under saturated conditions. The predictions of a reactive transport model were
subsequently tested against experimental work, namely microstructural investigations paired
with mineralogical characterization. The intention of this work was to identify different
assumptions in the modelling approach on kinetic parameters that control the carbonation
processes. This aspect is of high importance for the estimation of the CO2 uptake in oil-well
cements and improves the understanding of the simultaneous microstructural changes.
