Abstract: The pozzolanic reactivity of ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) with a Type I Portland cement was investigated for different blends of GGBFS (25 %, 50% and 75%) and temperatures (15oC, 23oC, 35oC) ranging from 0.5 hours to 90 days at a constant water to binder ratio of 0.45. Evaluation was based on isothermal heat of hydration and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). The pozzolanic reactivity of GGBFS was found to be a unique function of hydration of the Portland cement and the GGBFS content and an optimum pozzolanic reactivity is found between 50% and 75% GGBFS content. Due to the similarity in development of heat and strength the methodology presented in this study reduces the need for laborious strength testing normally used for optimization of blended systems.
