Abstract: Concrete structures could deteriorate, resulting from a variety of causes. Lately, retrofit and rehabilitation of the structures are in heavy demand all over the world. It results in the need for the development of effective inspection techniques prior to repair works. To this end, acoustic emission (AE) techniques have drawn a remarkable attention.
Corrosion process of reinforcement in concrete is readily monitored by AE measurement. Continuous AE monitoring was applied to practically determine the transition periods at onset of corrosion and at nucleation cracking. Further cracking mechanisms due to rebar corrosion in concrete was identified by SiGMA procedure (moment tensor analysis of AE). Thus, kinematics of micro-cracking due to corrosion is clarified.
AE behavior of concrete under compression is dependent on the degree of damage, and could be quantitatively analyzed, applying the rate process analysis. Using Loland's model, a relation between AE rate and the damage parameter was correlated. By estimating intact Young’s moduli of concrete from the database based on the relation, relative damages of concrete in existing structures are successfully estimated.
