Abstract: High-Performance Concrete in general and Self-Compacting Concrete in particular exhibits strong interactions between cement, fine-grained fillers and superplasticizer.
The fundamental idea of the "Superplasticizer-based Approach" is to include the effects of superplasticizers directly into the determination of parameters needed for the development of high-performance binder compounds. These parameters are for instance the water-demand, the stability against segregation and bleeding and the packing density.
Therefore a comprehensive model for a robust paste-composition of Self-Compacting Concrete and other High-Performance Concretes is developed, based on experience from extensive tests. These tests include pastes and mortars containing different fined-grained fractions as well as Self-Compacting Concrete mixes. In this article the relevant experiments and the derived model are presented. The model describes the dependencies of e.g. flowability and segregation stability on the paste composition of pastes containing superplasticizers.
From experiences with the "Superplasticizer-based Approach" an easy experimental test method is introduced to determine the minimum water-demand of powder compounds. Thus the results of any optimisation in packing density and grading curve can be verified directly.
Furthermore, the "Superplasticizer-based Approach" is transferred to other High-Performance Concretes and its validity is shown for Ultra-High-Performance Concrete.
