Abstract: A methodology developed at LABEST/FEUP was applied to compute a robustness measure based on data of typical materials weight deviations inherent of the production process at a specific production center. This methodology was applied to a set of SCC mixtures optimized according to different criteria. The optimization was derived from numerical models and a central composite design was carried out to mathematically model the influence of mixture parameters and their coupled effects on deformability, passing and filling abilities and compressive strength of SCC mixtures. Simulations replaced trial batches in estimating the variability of each SCC mixture to changes in water content, as recommended in "The European Guidelines for Self-compacting Concrete". SCC mixtures exhibiting similar fresh state properties, compressive strength and cost of materials per m3 were distinguished in terms of robustness. A more robust SCC mixture reduces the need to test and/or adjust each batch, minimizes extra costs with quality control and contributes to a successful implementation of SCC at the production center.
