Abstract: This paper establishes a macro/mecrostructure model for fresh SCC mixture based on space between neighboring aggregates. And thus a new mix design method for SCC is proposed. This model considers that the workability of SCC is determined by two parameters of rheology of paste and space coefficient between coarse aggregates in mixture. First, the space coefficient between aggregates required and the water to binder ratio(W/B) are determined to ensure that the concrete thus obtained has self-compacting ability and other desired SCC properties such as grade of compressive strength and durability, and then amount of raw materials in SCC mixture is obtained. Experiments are carried out to examine the performance of SCC designed by proposed method. Results indicate that the proposed method could produce successfully SCC of high quality. Compared to other method developed, this method is simpler, easier for implementation.
