Abstract: Concrete research tends to concentrate mainly on technical aspects. Aspects concerning the barriers to the implementation of innovations into the construction industry, which are in many cases of a non-technical nature, are not well covered by research. The success of SCC in the prefabricating industry contrasts sharply with the low implementation rate of SCC in cast-in-place concreting operations. Many recognize the advantages SCC offers compared to traditional concrete, but in the end the use of SCC in situ remains limited to non-routine situations and demonstration projects. This article first of all concentrates on the differences when introducing the SCC technology in the prefabricated concrete industry compared to the cast-in-place concrete and contracting industry. Secondly, a number of barriers to the application of SCC on the construction site are enumerated. Finally, 4 priorities which should be part of a long-term strategy to break the barriers to implementation are identified.
