Abstract: Apart from concrete composition, the mixing and placement of fresh concrete can have a significant effect on hardened concrete with regard to mechanical performance and durability, as well as other properties. This paper presents a numerical approach based on the Distinct Element Method (DEM) which is a means of simulation of fresh concrete during the working process. An extensive parameter study was performed in order to investigate numerically various effects on the rheological behaviour of concrete resulting in particular from concrete composition. It was found that the simulations provided qualitatively sound results, in principle correctly displaying decisive phenomena as observed in the corresponding experiments. However, further refinement of the model based on theoretical considerations is required as well as its subsequent calibration based on appropriate experiments.
