Abstract: Self-compacting concrete and traditional concrete are based on different mix designs. As such, a different pore structure of the cement matrix might occur causing a different durability. By means of mercury intrusion porosimetry the pore structure of 22 mixtures of hardened cement paste has been studied (16 self-compacting and 6 traditional pastes).
Experiments are performed after three curing periods: 14, 28 and 90 days. Besides the difference between self-compacting and traditional paste, some parameters are studied:
water/cement, cement/powder and water/powder ratio, type of cement and filler. The parameters discussed in this paper are the total intruded volume (porosity) and the critical pore size. The pore structure of self-compacting paste turns out to be less porous and more dense than traditional paste. One of the most important parameters is the water content. Both the porosity and the critical pore size are evaluated based on the different parameters. A theoretical calculation of the porosity is linked with the experimental results and gives good results. The critical pore size seems to be depending on the water/powder ratio.
