Abstract: The mechanisms involved in the bond phenomena are well known for conventional vibrated concrete. For self-compacting concrete however few test results are available and in practice the standards for conventional vibrated concrete are applied to self-compacting concrete as well.
In a first tentative study the bond strength, of rebars in three different concrete types, is determined (1 conventional vibrated concrete and 2 self-compacting concretes). The testing method, by means of "beam test" specimens, is based on RILEM RC6 part 1. The reinforcing bars used have a diameter of 20 mm. The bond length is 5 or 10 times the bar diameter. The specimens are loaded at constant rate till the slip reaches 3 mm. During testing the free end slip of the bars and the applied load are recorded.
From the results it can be seen that for the same compressive strength the maximum bond stress for self-compacting concrete is as high as or slightly higher as for conventional vibrated concrete. For increasing bond lengths the characteristic value of the bond stress remains the same, but the maximum bond stress decreases, probably because the reinforcement bar starts yielding. The slip, corresponding to the maximum bond stress, is in the same range for all mixtures.
