Abstract: In this research the carbonation of eleven self-compacting concretes is experimentally investigated and compared with the carbonation measured on normal vibrated concretes. The carbonation of self-compacting concrete mixtures is in general reduced as compared with the one of normal concretes of the same strength class produced with the same cement content.
This finding is irrespective of the type of cement, the type of aggregates, the amount of filler and the use of VMA. Both carbonation depth and water absorption of self-compacting mixtures decreased as the strength class of the mixtures increased. However the latter was not always lower than the water absorption measured on normally vibrated concretes of the same strength class.
