Abstract: Despite the fact that reinforced concrete structures may prove to be very durable, their gradual degradation over time, impairing both serviceability and structural safety, is still a matter of great practical concern in view of the economical consequences with regard to assessment, maintenance, and repair. Corrosion of embedded steel reinforcement is considered to be the most detrimental process responsible for structural deterioration.

The International RILEM Workshop on Integral Service Life Modelling of Concrete Structures was organised to address the modelling of chloride penetration and carbonation, and, to contribute to a comprehensive engineering approach for assessment of the initiation and the propagation period.

The main objective of the RILEM TC-213/MAI is the preparation of a State of the Art Report on currently available models for the stages of reinforcement corrosion in concrete structures as well as a compilation of relevant tests and sensors suitable for supporting such models. Another objective is the preparation of a RILEM Recommendation for users of service life models.

The main goal of the workshop was to generate a discussion among experts from all fields, on the current state-of-the-art with respect to models for both the initiation and propagation stages of reinforcement corrosion in concrete structures. Forty-eight papers from more than 20 countries were presented at the workshop. The papers were reviewed by members of the Scientific Committee.
The Workshop included the following specific topics:
- initiation stage: chloride ingress and carbonation
- critical chloride content and electrochemical processes
- modelling of structural consequences of reinforcement corrosion
- monitoring of concrete structures
- probabilistic approaches for service life design

We would like to thank all the participants in the Workshop, especially those that prepared and presented papers.
