Abstract: This study proposes ultrasonic time-of-flight computed tomography (TOF-CT) for the inspection of concrete structures. This technique can visualize the cross section of structural members of buildings in terms of the distribution of sound velocity obtained from the TOF measured for various propagation paths. The obtained image shows not only the presence of any anomaly but also the distribution of compressive strength or elastic modulus in the target section. When this technique is used for the inspection of an actual concrete column thoroughly covered with ceramic tiles, the cross section is easily visualized without causing any internal or external damage. A fundamental experiment is carried out to determine the influence of surface waves on the measured velocity of an ultrasonic wave. It is confirmed that ultrasound velocities measured in different paths for the same specimen are markedly different from each other.
