Abstract: For assessing the condition of historic masonry structures during regular maintenance, for planning and performance of restoration measures and for quality assurance after reconstruction, detailed knowledge is required about the internal structure as well as about material properties. Non-destructive and minor destructive testing methods offer possibilities to border critical areas, to detect structural differences and to amend the reliability of statistic evidence relative to or in addition to selective material extractions and investigations. In recent years, commercial systems or specifically developed systems like ground penetrating radar, ultrasonic, sonics, microseismics, geoelectric, impulse-thermography and flat-jack have been applied to non-destructive testing of historic buildings. But in most cases, only one of these methods has been applied, usually executing only single point measurements or twodimensional profiles. And very often the results of these investigations were difficult to interpret and the data were analysed only qualitatively. Strategies for an effective and useful combination of different methods for laboratory and on-site application will be discussed.
