Abstract: The paper studies short and long term effects of environmental conditions on the mechanical characteristics of timbrel domes. First, the effects of long term weathering and aging on the mechanical characteristics, as evidenced from experimental modal analysis, are discussed. Experimental modal analysis data from immediately after construction are compared to data from six months later, and a decrease in flexibility is observed. Second, the short duration fluctuations in the ambient temperature and humidity are observed. Modal analysis results, along with the temperature and relative humidity data during test time are collected over a two month period. The obtained natural frequencies are compared to temperature and humidity data, and normalization factors for the two are developed.
