Abstract: The S. Giuliano Monastery in Catania represents one of the most interesting examples of rebuilding process started in the immediate afterwards of the 1693 earthquake which destroyed the city.
The complex is of particular relevance both for its impressive dimensions that for the architectonic precious. The building was recently made object of diagnostic investigations in order to value employed technical solutions, materials properties and damages effective. This paper presents a part of the on site investigations carried out on the Monastery. In particular focalising the attention to the combined use of non destructive techniques with the historical study has been possible to reach a honest knowledge of technical detail and utilised material.
It is only by looking at the effective quality of each and single element used and at their various inter-connections, that is possible to identify those parts or pieces of the building which may result to be more vulnerable. Following an attentive analysis of the results and in light of the data collected, it is possible to intervene by means of identifying systems capable of improving the overall stability of the complex while reducing its seismic vulnerability.
