Abstract: In-situ evaluation of timber has not been traditionally taught at US universities at an undergraduate level and no graduate program in engineering evaluation of existing timber structures exists. While it has been recognized by professionals that special qualifications are necessary, especially in view of the large number of existing buildings containing wood components, educational enterprise driven by funding potential does not respond to the needs of the profession with adequate flexibility. Destructive, semi-destructive and non-destructive methods that are used in the evaluation of structural timber are becoming more complex and sophisticated and require highly trained professionals capable of planning the evaluation process and interpreting results. Opportunities in international graduate degrees exist to address these needs.
