Abstract: Wood density is a key variable in the evaluation and characterization of the mechanical and physical behaviour of wood. In this work, a study of the effectiveness for common nondestructive tests to predict the density of different wood species was carried out. Three distinct non-destructive techniques were selected: Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity (UPV), microdrilling (Resistograph) and penetration depth by means of Pilodyn.
The obtained results revealed the importance of the structure of wood (direction of annual rings) as well as the specie (Pine and Chestnut) on the non-destructive evaluation of density.
Statistical significant correlations were found between density and the resistance to penetration (Pilodyn) and to the micro-drilling (Resistograph).
