Abstract: The aim of the research was to investigate the corrosion susceptibility of different types of steels in the simulated environment of a LILW repository in Slovenia. Several different types of steel reinforcement were tested. These included common non-alloyed steel, austenitic and duplex stainless steel, as well as several other steels. Measurements were performed in aqueous solutions and in concrete specimens. Various measuring techniques were used. New methods were implemented, as well as conventional electrochemical techniques such as potential and galvanostatic pulse measurements. Special types of electrical resistance (ER) probes were prepared and embedded in concrete specimens for long-term monitoring purposes. The results of the measurements in aqueous solutions indicated the general corrosion properties of the different types of investigated steel. On the other hand, in the case of the concrete specimens the electrochemical techniques detected corrosion initiation only in specific cases. The duration of the exposure was too short to obtain the corrosion initiation and to evaluate the behaviour of different steels in concrete.
