Abstract: Design of reinforced concrete structures includes usually static calculations, general and detailed drawings and sometimes recommendations related to execution stages. Maintenance surveys and repairs are handled by other experts, which are not involved in the structural design. As a result, some structures are either unrepairable, or the cost of repair is unreasonably high.
One of the reasons is a difficulty to access the areas to be repaired.
The article contains case studies of typical problems, and recommendations for their solutions, such as:
• Effect of the distance between steel bars in reinforced concrete on durability and repairability;
• Effect of the distance between piles and other vertical elements of marine structures on repairability;
• Combination of structural disintegration mechanism' governing with accessibility to the corresponding critical areas.
The article is based on the experience gained in the Israeli sea ports.
