Abstract: In the industrialized countries, with enormous building activities in the period from 1950 to 1970, many concrete structures have been designed for an assumed service life between 50 and 70 years. In the coming decades the majority of these structures are expected to reach the end of their service life. During their service life most of these structures had to be repaired already due to premature degradation. Costs for maintenance and repair, as well as the costs future demolition and new built, are enormous. This paper discusses the main causes for maintenance and repair of concrete structures and the associated costs. The question is how the quality of concrete structures could be enhanced and the costs for future maintenance and repair can be reduced. It is discussed why the relevance of the issue seems to have increased in the past decade. The need for a multidisciplinary approach and concerted action of all actors in the building process is emphasized.
