Abstract: Knowledge of historic lime mortars, crafts and skills is a prerequisite in qualified architectural restoration of masonry buildings. The article gives an account of a project at Läckö Castle that focuses on the following question: how can mortars and plasters compatible with the characteristics and durability of high-quality historic examples be developed. Pilot studies are carried out on the facades of Läckö Castle - a Swedish national monument from the 17-th century - with the goal of developing a plan for com-prehensive restoration. The planned, forthcoming restoration of the facades offers a unique opportunity to develop, implement, test and evaluate materials and methods un-der a long period of time.
