Abstract:
The main features of particulate suspensions are briefly described. The rheology of suspensions depends on their particle concentration and on the strength and type of interactions between particles. Dilute suspensions of non-interacting particles are Newtonian but those of practical significance show a yield stress, structural build-up and breakdown, thixotropy and viscoelastic behaviour. Prediction models are available for some of these features.
