Abstract: The effect of conventional naphthalene formaldehyde sulfonate condensates (FDN) and Polycarboxylate-type superplasticizer (PCA) on pore microstructure, internal flaws and resistance to environmental attack action of concrete were investigated. The advantages of PCA in improving concrete durability were revealed. Compared with the property of FDN, PCA can further improve pore structure and pore size distribution in concrete and increase the compacting condition of concrete. PCA can also decrease the adiabatic temperature development inside concrete before hardening and decrease the shrinkage of hardened concrete. Meanwhile, PCA can improve the resistance to environmental actions (e.g. carbonation, freezing, chloride ion permeability, rebar corrosion) and therefore greatly improve the durability of concrete.
