Abstract: Although landfill gas (LFG) has many potential beneficial uses and may have a significant influence on abating releases of greenhouse gases (GHGs), the initial capital costs are high for constructing collection systems and combustion/utilization facilities or cogeneration systems.
To improve the economics of recovery projects, opportunities to accelerate the generation of LFG and strategies to improve capture potential and recovery efficiency from landfills are examined.
The results indicate increased moisture content, leachate recirculation (with heat addition) and installation of horizontal gas collection trenches to facilitate earlier gas capture, are the most favorable options.
