Abstract: The corrugated tube protocol is about to become the standard method for measuring the autogenous shrinkage of cement paste and mortar under quasi-isothermal conditions. Eventually this will reduce the number of measurement methods and increase the efficiency of research. Also, it provides a reference for the validation of other methods. Here, the shrinkage cone method for measuring the autogenous shrinkage is presented. Its suitability for measurements under non-isothermal conditions is outlined. Results of the autogenous shrinkage of ultra-high strength concrete are compared to those obtained with the corrugated tube method. The comparative investigations reveal that using an applicator gun to press sticky or stiff concrete into a corrugated tube may alter the autogenous shrinkage. The underlying alteration of the pore structure is evidenced by mercury intrusion porosimetry. Excellent agreement between corrugated tube and shrinkage cone method is obtained if the influence of pressure is excluded. It is thereby demonstrated that both methods allow for a precise measurement of autogenous shrinkage.
