Abstract: 
Wet applied sealants play a vital role in joints in maintaining the weather-tightness of buildings and engineering structures. This introductory chapter outlines the nature of sealed joints, the significance of the weather and the effect of operating conditions on sealed joint performance. The mechanical, physical, adhesion and application requirements of sealants are outlined. The section concludes with a summary of service performance, common causes of sealed joint failure, and a brief discussion of the importance of specification.
