Abstract:
Generalised statements on the durability of the various generic types of sealant are often too broad to make a judgement on a specific product. Within each sealant family there is a countless number of different formulations and the performance and durability of sealants is directly linked to the compound constituents. Furthermore, to date, there is no fully proven laboratory test by which to assess durability. To set the scene for the following chapters, the contribution of the formulation ingredients to sealant durability is discussed. The pressure on formulators to reduce formulation cost and whether this approach is compatible with durability is discussed. Finally, the question is asked 'What criteria should a sealant specifier use to select a durable sealant product?' and recommendations for the identification of suitable products are made.
