Corrosion Science & Corrosion Control for Infrastructure (CSC²I)

The course on Corrosion Science & Corrosion Control for Infrastructure (CSC2I) is an interdisciplinary course, encompassing fundamental aspects of corrosion science & technology, corrosion control and materials’ science for civil engineering. 

The course targets material classes as metals & alloys, concrete, coatings & composites. Corrosion-induced degradation and corrosion protection for main infrastructure will be discussed, including steel structures, with an emphasis on reinforced concrete structures.

In view of the broad and challenging world of Corrosion Science & Technology, especially considering the scope and reach of infrastructure-related phenomena, The Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences at TU Delft offers this annual course as an alliance of lectures and practical sessions. The course encompasses  theoretical background and fundamental knowledge in electrochemistry in view of metals’ corrosion, together with hands-on sessions – intensive practical sessions on corrosion knowledge application (lab and semi-field). 

Targeted audience

  • The course is intended for people working in the field of corrosion engineering, civil engineering and material science, where fundamental and practical knowledge of corrosion science, technology and corrosion control will bring understanding of challenges towards solving issues and finding solutions.
  • No preliminary or initial training is required, although it is presumed that the participant has knowledge and basic background of general material science, corrosion-related degradation mechanisms and/or concrete material science.


The course is designed in a manner, suitable for:

  • MSc, PhD** students
  • Postdoc researchers
  • Academic and industry professionals

*In view of optimum execution of the hands-on sessions, places are limited to 15 for the lab (incl. electron microscopy demonstration on corrosion products evaluation) and 25 for the semi-field practical sessions on corrosion and CP (metals and reinforced concrete)

**PhD students, who completed the full one-week course, will receive a certificate in accordance with TU Delft Graduate School (GS) regulations. The full course will account for 5 GS credits. An example for the relevant Certificate can be found here: (ECTS certificate)

Outcome and gain for course participants: i)  knowledge on fundamental principles of the main degradation mechanism in infrastructure i.e. corrosion (metals in general and reinforced concrete in particular) and how to protect structures from corrosion; ii)  understanding on the identification of corrosion types, formulation of corrosion risks and corrosion-related costs, making decision and argumentative choice/selection of material classes and protection techniques; iii) appraisal and weigh-up of the importance of a multidisciplinary approach (e.g. electrochemistry, chemistry and concrete material science) within corrosion assessment and control for infrastructure.

Scope & aim

CSC2I covers chemistry, electrochemistry, thermodynamics and kinetics, related to corrosion and corrosion control. The course aims to provide knowledge of key material properties and performance, exploitation requirements, degradation & ageing mechanisms, relevant to main infrastructure. Within an intensive one-week course program of alternating theoretical lectures,interactive Q&A modules, workshops and practical hands-on sessions, the participants will:

Course content & layout

  • theoretical knowledge on fundamental (electro)chemical principles in corrosion science & technology and corrosion control;
  • synergy of corrosion science (electrochemistry) and concrete material science (including cement-based microstructure, micromechanics, role of cracks) – a prerequisite for proper assessment of corrosion state & justified corrosion protection for infrastructure;
  • “hands-on” practical sessions (lab & field techniques) on qualification and quantification of steel corrosion phenomena, protection techniques, incl. links to cement based materials properties/performance;
  • NEW: designated session “Electron microscopy – evaluation of corrosion products and steel |cement paste interface
  • interactive sessions, Q&A modules, case studies;
  • novel research and applications (e.g. self-healing, nano-technology for corrosion control);
  • invited lectures;
  • elevator pitches from participants (optional).
