Abstract:
It is known that cracks in asphalt aggregate mixtures heal during the warmer periods of the year. This healing effect is experimentally studied for reflective cracks in bituminous road pavements, which have been formed by overloads of heavy trucks and/or by thermally induced stresses. The mechanical and fracture mechanical characteristic values of cracks are determined on core specimens of asphalt aggregate mixture, which is often used as standard asphalt in Middle Europe, after one to ten healing cycles. It is shown, that the extent of healing can be quantitatively determined with the wedge splitting test according to Tschegg. Under favourable conditions, approximatively 50% of the mechanical and fracture mechanical properties may be attained by the healing process. Notch tensile strength and resistance against crack propagation show different dependence on the number of healing cycles. The most important parameters of influence on the healing behaviour of cracks and the healing mechanisms in asphalt aggregate mixtures are discussed on base of the first experimental results.
