Abstract:
The prevention of reflective cracking in pavements has always been an area of concern when designing for asphaltic concrete overlays. Reflective cracking has been one of the principal causes of premature failures in asphalt overlays which has led to the exploration in ways to extend the life of pavements. One viable solution to retarding reflective cracking is through the use of reinforcing interlayers. This paper describes how a 4 year performance evaluation of a fibreglass geogrid with adhesive was implemented on US Federal Highway 190 in Hammond, Louisiana and on US Federal Highway 96 in Lumberton, Texas. Both evaluation sites were originally constructed over 20 years ago by means of full depth flexible and composite pavements. US 190 is a rural two-lane secondary highway which was once the main arterial artery between Baton Rouge and Covington prior to the construction of Interstate 12. US 96 is a five-lane highway that goes directly through downtown Lumberton providing access to the businesses along this route. On the basis of visual surveys and quantitative analysis, performance of the grid-reinforced pavement versus the non-reinforced control areas is established. Performance data is generated from bi-yearly site visits for the first three years and yearly thereafter. Included in this paper are the grid installation process and overlay techniques, the regions climatology and how surveys were carried out.
