Abstract: EC reseach project BEQUEST (Building Environmental Quality Evaluation for Sustainability through Time) aims at developing a basis for common EU understanding and implementation of sustainable urban development by creating a common language of sustainable development, building up a BEQUES T network, a Database and a decision support Toolkit. The objective is to create a directory of environmental assessment methods
and a Procurement Protocol which is a good practice guideline to reach effective sustainability. In order to produce the Procurement Protocol case studies are being carried out at both urban and building level. Viikki is an ecological housing are in Helsinki where environmental considerations are integrated into the entire plan by setting a criteria assessing ecological aspects of building. The PIMWAG ecological criteria and the Procurement Protocol used in Viikki are described in this paper.
