Abstract: The paper describes a method for environmental design. It shall be used as a tool for designers of buildings to help them develop environmental information for decision-makers with the aim to prevent environmental impact. The method shall be used early in the design phase where it still is possible to choose different alternatives. The application is intended both for designers of buildings and of wood products. If can be used both for modification of old products and development of new products. The method includes environmental design, assessment, market communication and implementation in the industry. The environmental design is based on the function of the product and includes al1 phases in the life cycle. The
target of the concept is to establish a system for environmental design, which can be implemented for different industrial products. The method is based on a case of a timber framed multi-storey building. Specific problems is considered such as the complexity of building components and how to evaluate different alternatives. Evaluation is based on LCA-methodology and includes the use of renewable and non-renewable resources, energy use,
global warming, acidification, nitrification and photo chemical ozone creation potential.
