Abstract: In the United States, it is recommended to apply the minimum expected life-cycle cost criterion to optimize the management of highway bridges. For this purpose, a realistic life-cycle cost estimation of highway bridges has to be developed and used to produce optimal expenditures for new and existing bridges under reliability constraints. These optimal expenditures have to take into account al1 expected costs from the design stage to the end
of the life span. This paper extends the methodology for optimal life-cycle management of individual bridges developed recently at the University of Colorado to bridge networks. This methodology integrates whole life costing with reliability in optimal management of bridge networks.
