Compendium comp002 : 1947-1997: Fifty Years of Evolution of Science and Technology of Building Materials and Structures

RILEM (Réunion internationale des laboratoires d’essais et de recherche sur les matériaux et les constructions), looks back to fifty years of activity in 1997. On this occasion, this volume of selected papers, all published in the RILEM Bulletins or later in the RILEM Journal Materials and Structures, has been edited.

The sequence of papers subdivided into different subjects such as strength and fracture mechanics, statistics and reliability, creep and shrinkage, heat and moisture transfer and concrete technology clearly demonstrates the evolution in these areas. It is shown for example how strength theories have been developed and finally lead to specific applications of fracture mechanics.

Following the parts of thinking for half a century in the wide field of building materials and structures will be a fascinating endeavour for engineers and scientists active today and it will certainly help to sharpen their eyes to define priorities for the future.
