Abstract: This experiment was accomplished in the Laboratory of Microbiology, Department of Botany, of the Institute of Biology, Federal University of Bahia, to determine the rate of decomposition of cellulose mortar, used as building components in civil construction, and also cellulose, obtained from recycled newsprint, as a function of time and water activity. Cellulolyic microorganisms were isolated and characterised and the rate of decomposition of the cellulose mortar and the cellulose pulp was determined. The results indicate that the rate of cellulose decomposition is higher than that of the cellulose
mortar. There was a decrease of the decomposition rate with increase of time of incubation, being more evident for the cellulose pulp than the cellulose mortar. Same rates of decomposition presented similar behavior, as shown by regression analysis. The mixture of cellulose with other components, like cement and sand matrix, turns it more resistant to the attack of the enzyme cellulase produced by cellulolytic microorganisms.
