Abstract: Composite structures combine the advantages of both materials concrete and steel. Developments in the recent years show a tendency to optimise design and construction of composite constructions by an increasing flexible use of structural forms and techniques.
An overview over some innovative trends is given. As a consequence of that tendency the borderline between buildings and bridges as well as the difference between girders, slabs and other structural elements start to diminish which demands of the structural engineers a broad knowledge and a holistic conceptual view.
