Abstract: A state-of-the-art review on measurements of autogenous shrinkage of concrete as presented in different publications, has revealed that the autogenous shrinkage varies enormously and that the influence of temperature varies even more. Obviously, the difference in measuring techniques is responsible for a major part of the variations. The paper discusses the consequence of chemical shrinkage of cement paste on the autogenous shrinkage of concrete and the relation between volumetric and linear measures. Furthermore, sources of error in the measurement of autogenous shrinkage is discussed and an overview of different measuring techniques is presented, and also a method which is constructed in order to minimise the sources of error.
