Abstract: A new type of admixture has been developed that enhances the performance of concrete in terms of durability. The New Concrete Improver (NCI) admixture regulates the curing of concrete and reduces drying shrinkage. Properties such as shrinkage (plastic and free drying), freeze-thaw resistance, permeability, and strength development are compared in concrete and mortar containing state-of-the-art shrinkage reducing admixtures, the New Concrete Improver, and no admixtures. Microstructural characterization is carried out in order to compare damage features to properties of the materials investigated.
