Abstract: With this workshop we are celebrating several anniversaries:

1. 5 years of RILEM TC 176 IDC Internal damage of concrete due to freeze-thaw attack.
2. 15 years of the Institute of Building Physics and Materials Science - IBPM at the University of Essen.
3. 25 years frost research in Munich and Essen.

First of all, we would like to present a short historical summary of the frost research carried out by the research groups in Munich and Essen under the leadership of Professor M.J. Setzer. Over the years, many excellent researchers and technicians worked together in a stimulating and productive environment and contributed to highly successful research. Owing to the limited space here, it is unfortunately impossible to name them all. Without ignoring the valuable work of persons not named here, we refer to the sci¬entists and engineers who contributed to the research in a prominent way.
