Abstract: 2D images of the cement microstructure were obtained from SPACE system. SPACE offers a 3D simulation of the properly packed cement particles in the fresh state, and the aggregated state of the model cement during the hydration process. Images of sections of the hardened materials have been studied by quantitative image analysis. To evaluate the stereological parameters for both partly hydrated cement particles and the porous phase, the images are transferred into binary ones where black represents the cement particles and white the pores. Through measurement of covariance, ‘psegbin’ (probability of a segment to be inserted into a certain phase) and ‘phexbin’ (probability of a hexagon fitting into a certain phase) with Micromorph (an application software of mathematical morphology), some major features of the cement hydration process could be character¬ized: quantitative and morphological evolution of porosity. It has been shown that the cement hydration system complies with Boolean model with the primary grains of spheres. Therefore, an image of real concrete was studied after filtration and segmenta¬tion in the same way. Results were satisfactory.
