Abstract: Qualification of a concrete mixture for use in a freeze-thaw environment can be accom-plished by subjecting specimens prepared from the mixture to an appropriate freeze-thaw test. Such a test should be able to produce the same type of deterioration as could be expected in the field, should have good repeatability, and should be able to produce results within a reasonable amount of time. The purpose of this work is to examine the various parameters involved in an acceptable freeze-thaw qualification test. These parameters include specimen dimensions, preparation and conditioning, test conditions including moisture, de-icing salt, and temperature exposure. Existing freeze-thaw tests as well as measured field temperature profiles are examined, and observed deterioration mechanisms are compared to field exposures. Recommendations for a freeze-thaw test to be used for mixture qualification are presented.
