Abstract:
The paper discusses the criteria and procedures for structural assessment, monitoring and evaluation of existing masonry buildings in seismic regions. Before any intervention to remedy or improve the load-bearing capacity of the structure is carried out and the existing structure is evaluated and redesigned, a reliable structural diagnosis should be carried out. Besides visual inspection of the building, which includes investigations to determine the type and conditions of structural materials, elements and systems, destructive and non-destructive tests to determine the mechanical properties of materials and load-bearing capacity of structural elements, are needed to evaluate the building's structural system. In order to determine the possible causes of existing damage, short and long-term observations and measurements are often performed to collect the relevant information for structural evaluation.
