Abstract: Research is now in progress in the UK on the effects of water on the performance of sealants used in construction. This aims principally to develop appropriate test methods for the evaluation of sealants to be used in environments where water is a significant degrading influence. Conditions range from those of building joints to fully immersed joints in water-retaining structures, where continuous exposure to aggressive aqueous media may be experienced.
This paper reviews some recent research, discusses the laboratory test procedures available for the evaluation of water-resisting sealants and proposes a system for the evaluation of performance, based upon observed changes in elongation and modulus of sealant samples exposed to aqueous media.
